New DVD on Natural Family Planning fulfils urgent need among Catholics for instruction

16/01/2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Commended by Cardinal Cormac and other English Bishops
National launch being held on 31st January at Westminster Cathedral Hall

In an exciting new venture, the Catholic Truth Society, a long-established publisher, is launching this month, in partnership with Luton Good Counsel, a new DVD for introducing Catholic couples and young people to Natural Fertility Awareness: The Joy of God’s Plan.

Responding to the needs of the Church
This new resource responds to the call of the late Holy Father, John Paul II, that “...more precise knowledge of the female cycle and... more serene utilization of natural methods of regulating births, deserve to be better known, encouraged and effectively proposed for application.”

It is also a response to the urgent need for teaching resources noted in the English and Welsh Bishops’ report on marriage and family, Not Easy But Full of Meaning, that “whilst promoting natural family planning, (the Church) has yet to offer a coherent national information service for those interested in pursuing this means of controlling fertility.” (n165).

The DVD has been commended by Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor, as a “timely resource to assist parishes”, and has also won the support of Archbishops Kevin McDonald and Vincent Nichols, and of Bishops Bernard Longley and John Hine (Chair of the Committee for Marriage and Family Life of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales). See below for full list of endorsements.

A resource for all working with couples and young people
The DVD uses the inspiring and occasionally humorous personal testimonies of couples together with an entertaining talk by Fr David Barrett on the Church’s teaching on marriage and family life. These are followed by a slide presentation explaining how Natural Fertility Awareness works. The DVD is introduced by Archbishop Kevin McDonald of Southwark.

Parish priests and those assisting them in preparing couples for marriage will find this DVD especially useful as an easy way to introduce Catholics to this subject. A booklet “Questions & Answers on Sex and Marriage” accompanies the DVD and deals with frequently asked questions on this topic. These are affordably priced to ensure wide usage (DVD=£14.95 inc. VAT; Booklet=£1.95).

The national launch
The launch on 31st January at Westminster Cathedral Hall is open to all. Starting at 6pm, the event is jointly hosted by Archbishop Kevin McDonald of Southwark and Bishop Bernard Longley of Westminster. An extract from the DVD will be shown, and there will be a talk and discussion on the subject. If you wish to attend, please contact CTS on 020 7640 0042 prior to the event as this helps us to cater for appropriate numbers; however, there will also be free admission on the evening if you are unable to contact us in advance.

ENDORSEMENTS
“People often say that creation bears the footprint of God. Contemplating the powerful gift of fertility, one might also sense the fingerprint of God, as it so closely reflects the life of the Trinity in our world.
“I commend this DVD to all concerned for the pastoral care of marriage and family. It is a timely resource to assist parishes to respond to the Bishops’ report: Not Easy But Full of Meaning, that ‘whilst promoting natural family planning, (the Church) has yet to offer a coherent national information service for those interested in pursuing this means of controlling fertility.’ (n165)
“As a general introduction to the subject, supported by personal witness, it will go some way in addressing this as we move forward guided by the wisdom of John Paul II that: ‘...more precise knowledge of the female cycle and... more serene utilization of natural methods of regulating births, deserve to be better known, encouraged and effectively proposed for application’. (Address to NFP specialists) ”
Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster

“A very useful resource for couples undergoing marriage preparation and for married couples attending marriage enrichment courses. The DVD contains powerful testimonies by couples and is a good advertisement for the benefits of NFP. The DVD is addressing a very important need.”
Most Rev. Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Birmingham

“I am happy to recommend the DVD as a very worthwhile introduction to this vitally important area of marriage relationship. It is often not possible to provide a well-informed articulate authority to speak and interact with a group of couples, and it is then that this DVD would be an invaluable resource. The facts are clearly explained and are firmly situated in the whole context of God’s design for fruitful married love.”
Bishop John Hine, Chair of the Committee for Marriage and Family Life of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales

“I found the DVD and the material valuable and helpful... An excellent talk! ... I gained considerably from the booklet. I am sure many will find it helpful!”
Mgr. Jim Overton, Westminster Diocese, April 2006

“This is a lovely and apt presentation – certainly very relevant for our day. Well done. Beautiful production. I do hope it ‘travels’ widely into the Homes and Hearts of our folk.”
Canon Bennie Noonan, Northampton Diocese

“An excellent useful tool for parish use.”
Fr. Michael Griffiths, Northampton Diocese

“I thought the video section was most professional and enjoyed the animated affirmation of Christian marriage... The PowerPoint presentation contained all the facts and would be well understandable by the lay person... I thought the endorsement of Christian marriage and its background, e.g. in Genesis, is excellent... I would certainly endorse this presentation.”
Pamela Sims FRCS, FRCOG, Consultant Gynaecologist

“Here is a good pastoral message, well constructed, coherent and visually interesting with touches of humour to carry the message forward. It provides an excellent stimulus for discussion and exploration of important issues for adolescents, engaged couples and those already married. It is well argued... The Joy of God's Plan can be highly recommended.”
Leo Simmonds, Lay person
